Tommy Overcash recognized, city purchases fire truck, alcohol license granted at City Council meeting

MADISON – A couple of awards were given out in the early stretch of the Madison City Council meeting Oct 27, with one of the Council’s own being recognized for his extensive amount of service.
Unknown to him before the meeting, Council President Tommy Overcash was awarded a 10-year service pin to mark his decade of time on the Madison City Council.
“That’s a lot longer than anyone else has been here,” said Councilwoman Ronica Ondocsin, who presented the award.
Ondocsin briefly went over his accomplishments earned over the 29 years Overcash has spent in Madison, including the vice presidency of the Madison Optimist Club and membership of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, Madison Station Historical Society, Planning and Zoning Commission and Madison Friends of the Library, among others.
“You’ve got to do something with your time, and I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it,” Overcash said.
Keith Bedsole followed it up with the Madison City Disability Advocacy Board Employment Award, which was awarded to Publix on County Line Road. The honor was given in conjunction with National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
District 2 Councilman Steve Smith said Madison’s Palmer Park is once again a finalist for hosting the Dizzy Dean State Tournament for youth baseball. Palmer Park hosted the 8-and 10-year old tournaments in July.
Fresh Spirits, Inc. received its off-premise beer/wine/liquor license. It will now be able to do business at County Line Road.
The Madison Fire Department introduced a resolution to purchase an E_ONE eMax Rescue Pumper – a new fire truck for the department that was allocated in the city’s capital replacement fund in the 2015 fiscal budget.
“It’s got to be built now, so it will be at least nine months before it gets here,” Deputy Chief Jeff Birdwell said.
