MadTown ThrowDown blasts away Feb. 20

MADISON – Young musicians and performers representing more than 30 schools from the Tennessee Valley and surrounding states will compete in the 2016 MadTown ThrowDown on Feb. 20.

Bob Jones High School will host this exciting competition for indoor drumlines and color guards, who use music, pageantry, props, dance and interpretation to tell a story. The event will kick off at noon in the recently renovated main gymnasium at Bob Jones, 650 Hughes Road.

“The public is invited and encouraged to attend this incredible display of musicianship and performance by these talented young people,” MadTown publicist Robin Dauma said. Dauma teaches English at Bob Jones.

“Actually, more color (winter) guards will perform than drumlines, so it’s definitely a dual focus competition,” Dauma said.

The one-of-a-kind contest will feature local groups, including Bob Jones as host school; Athens, Buckhorn and Sparkman high schools; and Discovery Middle School.

Instruments in the Bob Jones Drumline are snare, tenor and bass drums; cymbals; marimbas; vibraphones; xylophone; bells; electric and bass guitar; electric piano; synthesizer; and various auxiliary percussion instruments.

“The contest will include ‘Momentum,’ a new ‘Independent A’ percussion group. Also, Mount Juliet High School Winter Drumline from Mount Juliet, Tenn., a World Class finalist at Winter Guard International (WGI) World Championships, will be featured,” Dauma said.

Color guards will perform from approximately noon to 5:30 p.m. Drumlines will compete around 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Kevin Smart is director of Bob Jones Drumline. Leigh Thomas is director of bands at Bob Jones.

Tickets are $8 and will be available in Zompa Auditorium lobby, located on the southeast corner of the Bob Jones campus.
