MADISON – The glitz and glamour of the runway will shine for the Rising Fashion Design Star show at James Clemens High School.

James Clemens fashion students in collaboration with Alabama Fashion Alliance will present the show on May 13 at 7 p.m. “We have students participating from James Clemens, Bob Jones, Lee, Spain Park and Arab high schools, Madison Academy and Discovery Middle School,” Sherri Shamwell said.

Shamwell teaches family and consumer science courses at James Clemens.

“We invited middle and high school students across the state. We have 31 signed up for the ‘Fashion Illustration’ category; 30 for the ‘Fashion Innovation’ category; and nine for the ‘Sewing and Construction’ category,” Shamwell said.

Judges will be Maria Wilkie, apparel design/pattern drafting instructor at Alabama A&M University; Patricia McCaulley Young, fashion industry professional and educator; Scott Roberts, professional photographer with Omni Photography; and LeJeune with Alabama Fashion Alliance.

The fashion show’s emcee will be Cheryl Brehm, Mrs. Tennessee America 2015. Brehm won her title on her first try in a pageant. She advanced to the Top Six contestants at the Mrs. America Pageant in Las Vegas in September 2015.

With the help of her crown, Brehm promoted her favorite nonprofit, Mercy Multiplied (formerly Mercy Ministries), a free-of-charge Christian residential program that provides hope to young women around the world. “Due to the large number of women who ask for help, the waitlist contains hundreds of applicants, some of whom have died waiting to get accepted into the program,” Shamwell said.

Brehm is committed in fighting in the war against sex trafficking in Tennessee. She often speaks at training sessions and campaign videos for the cause. She works as an instructor at Liberty University.

“Kohl’s is supporting us by hosting a small showing of their fashions, modeled by our students, on the night of the show,” Shamwell said.

“We still need sponsors for our prizes. We plan to use the money from ticket sales for our prizes, but it would be nice to have one or two corporate sponsors,” she said. “Our requests to several local businesses have been turned down.”

Tickets are $10 and $15 at the door.
