MADISON – Getting ‘a pat of the back’ causes almost everyone to feel appreciated.
An employee appreciation program honored Madison Senior Center’s staff, who heard testimonials and accepted treats.
The Senior Center Council coordinated the appreciation effort on Oct. 11. Members treated center employees to a party, with employees seated at a head table with colorful fall decor.
Center Director Vickie Parker said the event “was a most joyous occasion for myself and the staff. It warmed our hearts to hear the seniors express their appreciation of us.”
Along with Parker, the center’s staff includes activities director Joy Edwards, administrative secretary Cheryl Conrad, nutritionist LaWanda Mason, maintenance worker Kenneth Brown and bus driver and maintenance worker Richard Gray.
Council vice president Peggy Robinson opened festivities by sharing her thoughts: “Thank you for taking such good care of us ‘wrinkled-y’ old people.” Robinson encouraged members also to share their feelings.
Numerous senior citizens walked to the microphone to express their thoughts:
* “Thank you to each and every one of you.”
* “You are as welcoming and nice each day as you were the day I came and checked the place out to decide if I wanted to join.”
* “Thank the Lord for this place,” said one member, fighting back tears.
* “I appreciate the work and hospitality here. God bless everyone here.”
* “There’s so much diversity here.”
* “We’re like family.”
* “If I weren’t here, I would be at home … just me and the dog.”
Center member Rehana Whatley said, “You are wonderful people. This is my second home. On Saturday, I wake up sad, because I can’t go to the senior center.”
Lena Coney serenaded the honorees with a rendition of “I Don’t Want Nobody Else But You.” The council served honorees with punch, cheese squares, peanuts, snack crackers, Chex party mix and pretzels. In a guessing game, members drew slips of paper with a fact to match to the correct employee.
Center member Joan Moran told employees, “We don’t have on million dollars, but we do have a hundred grand.” Each honoree received a six-pack of “100 Grand” candy bars.
Madison Senior Center’s address is 1282 Hughes Road. For more information, call 256-772-6258.
