James Clemens’ Blue Angels donate IV wagon to hospital

“Pediatric patients at Madison Hospital will be all smiles while being transported in this new IV pole wagon, thanks to the James Clemens High School Varsity Dance Team,” Katie Coppens with Huntsville Hospital Foundation said. “We thank them for their generosity and community spirit.”

MADISON – Young patients at Madison Hospital will have a more relaxed and reassuring ‘ride’ while they are hospitalized because of outreach by the Varsity Dance Team at James Clemens High School.

The Jets dancers worked to raise funds to donate “Chad’s Bracket,” an IV pole wagon to Madison Hospital. A hospitalized youngster with an IV drip actively placed in the arm can ride in the wagon on a trip from a hospital room to a lab for tests or other medical procedure.

The Blue Angels, which is the nickname of the Jets dancers, are in the freshman through senior classes at James Clemens.

Members of the Blue Angels presented the wagon on Jan. 5 to Madison Hospital employees, including Melissa Taylor, Director of Clinical Operations; registered nurse Cindy Cooper, Emergency Department Nurse Manager; and registered nurse Ryan Murray, Director for Emergency Department Imaging and Cardiopulmonary.

Another person at the presentation, Roger Leggett from Atlanta represented Chad’s Bracket, the non-profit organization that creates the IV wagons. The name ‘Chad’s Bracket’ refers to the device used to attach IV poles to children’s wagons for easier transportation of children by parents and hospital staff.

The specialized wagons are in use at only several hundred medical facilities in the country.

Leggett invented Chad’s Bracket and has not received any profit from this venture. Because brackets and IV poles are custom made, each part of a completed wagon is expensive. Roger charges only the cost of the wagon. He even travels at his own expense.

Chad’s Bracket has wagons placed at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta; WellStar Paulding Hospital in Hiram, Ga.; WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell, Ga.; WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga; and Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.
