Bob Jones And Madison Academy Win At Southern Coast Cup Soccer

FOLEY, ALA.- Both the Bob Jones boys and Madison Academy girls soccer teams took first place honors at the Southern Coast Cup presented by Adidas.

In addition, the Madison Academy boys’ team took second place in their division.

“We went to this tournament with mixed feelings having only four substitutes for the entire event, plus some slight injuries with several key players,” said Uwe Spiller, head coach of Bob Jones. “The goal was to play good competitive games and see how we can compete against top level teams.”

The Patriots are currently ranked No. 4 in the latest Class 7A state rankings and finished undefeated in the Southern Coast Cup’s Bayou Saint John division. Bob Jones defeated Cookeville, Tenn. 4-3 behind two goals by David Barreto and solo scores by Bailey McGough and Justin Alcantara. In the second game against No. 9 Foley, the Pats posted a 4-1 victory with again two goals scored by Barreto and one each by McGough and Jay Herrin. In the squad’s third match, a struggle win over Bartlett High of Germantown, Tenn., as Alcantara scored both goals, including one on a penalty kick, in the 2-nothing victory.

The Class 4A fourth ranked Lady Mustangs from Madison Academy posted a perfect 3-0 record in the Cup with dominating wins. The Mustangs defeated La Fayette High of Georgia 8-1, Baldwin County 4-1 and Childersburg 7-0 to earn the top honor in the Oyster Bay Division of the Cup. In the first match, junior Emery Mills had five goals and one assist, Ashley Ferguson, a sophomore, had two goals and two assists while sophomore Paxtyn Whitney had a lone goal. Against Baldwin County, Mills again hit pay dirt scoring four goals while senior Dejon Fletcher had 14 saves in goal. In the third and final win, Mills again had four goals, Ferguson had two scores while Whitney had one.

“Our girls played as one throughout the tournament connecting passes, making runs and being first to the ball as everyone on the team contributed to our success,” said Rachel Farhat head coach of Madison Academy. “These girls have shown great effort and teamwork this season.”

Meanwhile, the Madison Academy boys took second place in the Hammock Bay Division. The Mustangs lost their opening match against Livingston Academy, Tenn. 2-1, but came back with two victories pounding Gatlinburg-Pittman 9-0 and Childersburg 7-0.

“I picked this tournament for our team building reasons to work on team chemistry and on stamina to prepare for our playoffs,” added Spiller of his Bob Jones Patriots.

Farhat added more about the Lady Mustangs. She said, “I couldn’t be more proud of seeing them grow as players and young ladies. They are an exciting team to coach.”
