MADISON-  James Clemens High recently hosted the 50-plus team Sectional track meet and the Lady Jets won the Class 7A Section 4 title for the fifth year in a row and now set up for a possible run for the state championship at the State Meet scheduled to be held in Gulf Shores.

James Clemens took the title with eight first place performances including two by junior Ashlee Osaji in both the long jump (17-feet, 8.25-inches) and triple jump (36-09). Additional Jets to win gold medals included Vada Samuels, 12, 400-meter (56.24-seconds), Sylvia Cortes, 11, 800-meter (2:22.81), Shataeya Ligon, 10, 100 hurdles (15.53), Uriah James, 12, 300 hurdles (46.15), Zuri Falkner, 12, discus (130-03) and 4X400, 3:52.88. The Sparkman Senators, which finished fourth, were led by the top performances of Lauryn Hall, 12, 100-meter (12.08), and 4X400 (46.99). Bob Jones trailed in fifth position and with two gold medal winners in Kiara Hill, 11, high jump (5-04) and Nichole Harting, 11, javelin (109-10).

Meanwhile in Class 4-A, Madison Academy had three top athletes in freshman Liyah Nelson who won both the 100-meter (12.55) and 200-meter (25.74)  and the 4X100 relay (50.33).

In boys, Hewitt-Trussville was the top team while James Clemens was third, Bob Jones fourth and Sparkman sixth. The Jets were led by three winning efforts in Nolan Smith, 12, 400-meter (48.97), Miguel Cortes, 12, javelin (161-04) and the 4X400 relay (3:27.67). The Patriots of Bob Jones took home one gold medal as Chase Fiddler won the high jump (6-06). Sparkman had two winning performances, both coming from Charles Lewis, 11, in both the 100-meter (11.10) and 200-meter (21.89).

In Class 4A, the Mustangs of Madison Academy had five top winners. Evan Brooks, 11, won both the 100-meter (11.06) and 200-meter (22.44), Jaylen Moore, 11, 400-meter (51.93) and two relay efforts, 4X100 (42.80) and 4X400 (3:32.55).

“Over 1,500 athletes participated on the two days and over 100 volunteers from several organizations worked the meet,” said Drew Bell head coach of James Clemens and meet host. “The meet ran exactly on time.”

The top five performances in each event automatically qualified for the State Meet.
