Locally owned Pet Supplies Plus now open in Madison

MADISON-  If you own a pet, or are thinking about getting one, Pet Supplies Plus has what you need.  The locally owned franchise opened May 13 and still has special deals through June. The store is huge-7,300 square feet and has special features including a dog wash station, grooming station, kittens and adult cats for adoption.

The store also has an extensive exotic fish and bird section.  They sell reptiles including ball pythons, geckos, bearded dragons, lizards, anoles, and turtles. Pet Supplies Plus has a staff that are experts on any kind of animal from dogs and cats to reptiles.

The chain was founded on the belief that convenient, quality service for busy customers was lacking in the pet industry. The first store opened in Redford, Michigan in 1988 and since then the neighborhood-style pet store has established locations in 33 states.

The franchise has over 400 locations nationwide. The local store, conveniently located next to Kroger at the corner of Brownsferry and Wall Triana, is owned by Ray Bellenfant and his wife Rhonda.

“We both love pets,” Bellenfant said. “At one time we owned 11 between dogs and cats to horses. We have bought and sold small businesses in the past so it was a natural to open a pet store. We have a passion and care a lot about them. We wanted to get our children started in the business world and this is a business we enjoy working in.”

Bellenfant, a longtime Madison businessman, served as President of the Madison Chamber of Commerce and is on the Board of Directors of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

He has dogs and cats on his 11-acre farm in Madison County and knows the pet supply business.

“We pride ourselves on having complete service and products and if you need a product we don’t carry we will try our best to stock it. We want to carry everything pet owners need.

Our grand opening was a great success, our biggest day ever. A lot of neighbors came in. We hope they will come back and shop with us. We are right in the middle of Madison. We have had a lot of people come in for the dog wash. It was free for the first few days. It is still low priced and includes everything. Our groomer stays booked. We are looking for a second groomer.”

Chris Barnes is the store manager. The store has 14 employees.

The store features extensive food selections for dogs starting with raw food, premium food, health food, and competitively priced store brands customers are familiar with.

Brands include Stella and Chewy’s featured on the Today Show, Bil Jac, Science Diet, Whole Earth, Eukomuba, Royal Canin, and private label Redford.

Baked dog treats are also available. The Preferred Pet Card gets customers all the latest discounts. The store features an extensive aquarium section. It also has wireless security fences.  To contact Pet Supplies Plus of Madison call 256-325-0125.

The store also has a donation bin that that customers can bring any unopened dog or cat food item they have leftover and it will go to feed animals in need.
