West Madison Elementary to host fun ‘Math Night’ Nov. 8

MADISON — Children and parents can have a positive experience with math this week that is both educational and fun thanks to “Math Night,” a program from local math education experts at Mathnasium of Madison.

West Madison Elementary and Mathnasium of Madison will be hosting their own Math Night on Nov. 8, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  with food, games and fun for all to enjoy.

Math Nights have been developed by Mathnasium in partnership with National PTA in support of their “STEM + Families” initiative to provide quality STEM experiences for elementary school students and their families across the country. Hundreds of PTAs have already put on Math Nights with their local Mathnasium Centers.

The value of STEMwhich stands for science, technology, engineering, and matheducation is increasing year by year. According to a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce in 2016, college graduates aged 25-29 with STEM degrees had some of the highest median annual earnings in comparison to college graduates with other degrees. As the foundation of all other STEM subjects, giving students a strong math background is an essential part of a STEM education. Mathnasium of Madison, the area’s math-only learning center, is dedicated to helping children learn and master math.

Now, West Madison Elementary School will have the chance to take advantage of this unique opportunity with the hosting of their own Math Night. Linda Hussong, owner and director of the Mathnasium center in Madison, said Mathnasium recently awarded the PTA of West Madison Elementary School with the Mathnasium STEM + Families $1,000 grant, which is awarded each year to PTAs that apply for the grant and participate in the Math Night events.

Mathnasium Corporate awards 35 of these $1,000 grants in support of the STEM + Families partnership.

“Parents and students frequently request programming that reinforces STEM subjects,” said Hussong. “We’re thrilled to provide an event where families can enjoy math games together and discover STEM talents and interests. Mathnasium typically sees a huge turnout for these events with invitations to come back and do them again and again.”

Hussong also said Mathnasium will be helping the school’s PTA in its efforts to raise funds for new playground equipment at the school.

West Madison Elementary School is located at 4976 Wall Triana Highway in Madison.
