Linda Burgess Inducted Into Hall Of Fame

HUNTSVILLE- More than 30 years after graduating Bob Jones High, Linda Burgess has been recognized for her athletic accomplishments by being inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the 2019 class of inductees at the annual ceremony held at the Von Braun Center.

Burgess was a 1988 graduate of Bob Jones where she was an All-State basketball player for the Lady Patriots. She played for Calhoun College prior to transferring to the University of Alabama, then played professional basketball in two countries overseas before playing four years in the WNBA here in the U.S.

“I’m honored to be alongside those already enshrined and who have accomplished their place in the Hall of Fame,” said Burgess, 49.

Currently a teacher at Central High School in Macon, Ga., Burgess is known as one of the best players to ever come out of the Bob Jones program and North Alabama. With the Lady Patriots she averaged more than 30 points and 20 rebounds in her senior season. At Calhoun with the Lady Warhawks, Burgess flew high again earning All-American honors in her two seasons at the Decatur based school. Upon arriving in Tuscaloosa to play for the Crimson Tide, Burgess poured in points at 20 per game and was named All-SEC as both a junior and senior in 1991 and 1992 for the Crimson Tide.

Her dream of playing professional basketball became a reality when she suited up for play in Switzerland and Israel before making her way back the States where she played in the WNBA for four seasons. She retired from professional basketball in 2001.

“I never gave much thought of making a career in women’s basketball,” said Burgess. “I just didn’t know as I never dreamed I would use basketball to gain an education and establish a career.”
