Madison Kroger murder subject arrested after being shot in Chattanooga

Holdon

MADISON – The Madison Police have located the suspect in Sunday’s deadly shooting at the Kroger store on Wall Triana in Madison.

According to Madison Police Chief David Jernigan, Spencer Xzavier Holden, 21, was located at a hospital in Chattanooga, TN. He is the man Madison investigators say allegedly shot Zeandre Marjuan Paul Zachary, 25, of Huntsville behind the Kroger parking lot Sunday afternoon.

On Tuesday, a warrant was issued for Holden’s arrest and the information was entered into a national database for law enforcement agencies.

“Earlier this morning the Madison Police had been notified that the suspect had been located in a hospital in Chattanooga where he had apparent multiple gunshot wounds,” Jernigan said at a press conference Wednesday morning. “It appears the suspect had been shot, hailed a cab and had been transported to a local hospital emergency department.”

MPD spokesperson Major John Stringer said the hospital ER staff alerted the Chattanooga PD, who began an investigation into the shooting that occurred in their jurisdiction. As soon as they identified the suspect, they notified the Madison Police Department.

“We currently have investigators in route to speak with the subject,” Stringer said. “He is currently under guard by Chattanooga Police at the hospital. He is in critical, but stable condition.”

He said Holden is not from Chattanooga, but has family there. It is not clear yet what led the suspect to being shot or if the two shootings are related. “It’s very important for our detectives to go to Chattanooga to talk to the suspect and find out exactly what happened,” Stringer said.

Stringer also said Madison Police detectives will begin working with the Madison County District Attorney’s office to begin the extradition process as soon as Holden is available to travel.

According to statement from the police, the MPD was notified around 4 p.m. Sunday by a passerby of a gunshot victim who was seen in the rear parking area of Kroger. Officers responded and located the victim, Zeandre Zachary.

He was transported to the Huntsville Hospital ER in critical condition and later was pronounced dead.

Stringer said investigators believe the suspect and victim were acquaintances. He also said they are not aware of any connection they had with the Kroger Store. “It appears that this was just the spot where the two happened to be meeting or came in contact with each other.”

Madison Police Patrol Division, Crime Scene Investigators and Detectives did an outstanding job of responding, securing the scene, gathering evidence, broadcasting both a local and nationwide BOLO and securing a murder warrant based upon probable cause for the homicide,” Stringer said. “I am extremely proud of their work and it continues to be of the highest caliber. This was an isolated incident and both subject and victim were acquainted. We will be working diligently over the next several days and weeks to build a case suitable for presentation to a grand jury.”
