Overcash declines re-election bid for District 5
MADISON – Tommy Overcash will not run for reelection to Madison City Council. He has served as District 5 Councilman since 2004.
“It has been my honor and great privilege to have served the residents of Madison’s District 5 and all of our fair city for the past 16 years. I am announcing today that I will not seek a fifth term,” Overcash said.
“Debbie and I are looking forward to quality time with one another, family and friends, enjoying our volunteer activities and a little slower pace. Our hearts are and will always be with Madison,” he said.
Overcash grew up in Starkville, Miss. His father was a professor at Mississippi State University, and his mother taught English in Starkville City Schools. Tommy Overcash and Debbie Mullendore married in 1980.
Tommy earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Mississippi State and a master’s in engineering management from Florida Institute of Technology.
“When Debbie, Cameron and I moved to Madison in the spring of 1985, we joined less than 6,000 other residents in a sleepy little suburb. How times have changed!” Overcash said. “The births of Chandler and Mason weeks after our move brought Madison’s population up by two.”
The Overcashes have experienced the formation of Madison City Schools, construction of Madison Hospital, expansion of Palmer Park and development of Dublin Park, along with miles of new roads, greenways and dog parks. He witnessed the city’s solid financial footing with an AA+ bond rating and acquisition of a minor league baseball team.
“Madison is blessed to have many active and involved citizens, city department heads among the best in their field and city employees who work daily to keep Madison moving forward in the right direction,” Overcash said. “The current administration and City Council work each and every day to improve our quality of life, ensure smart growth, pursue economic development and tackle tough traffic issues.”
With extensive community service, Tommy is a member Madison Optimist Club, Madison Friends of the Library, Madison Station Historical Preservation Society, Madison Arts Council, Madison Chamber of Commerce, Huntsville – Madison County Chamber of Commerce, Madison Beautification and Tree Board, Huntsville/Madison County Botanical Gardens and Huntsville Madison County Land Trust.
Currently, he works as a Senior Software/Systems Engineer with Willbrook Solutions at NASA on the SLS program. The Overcashes are members of Asbury United Methodist Church.
The Overcashes have three sons. Cameron and wife Destanie of Denver, Colo.; Chandler and Sarah of Tuscaloosa; and Mason and Ashley of Madison. Tommy and Debbie’s grandchildren are Noah Catherine, Weston, Micah, Laeth, River and Margaret Anne.
