Bob Jones team reigns as regional champ in National Science Bowl

MADISON – Student teams from Madison claimed impressive honors in regional competition for the 2022 National Science Bowl on Jan. 29.

Bob Jones High School won first-place honors at regionals held at Alabama School of Math and Science in Mobile. Team members are Aubteen Pour Biazar, Captain Neha Chopade, Puja Chopade, Thomas Nguyen and Justin Pan.

Teacher sponsor at Bob Jones for National Science Bowl is Mary Maguire, and parent coaches are Beena Chopade and Dr. Shubham Chopade.

The team from James Clemens High School was following closely by reaching second place. Gretta McDaniel coaches Science Bowl.

Team A members, in second place to Bob Jones, are Sohail Baig, Yuti Das, Neil Sethi, Pranav Somu and Joshua Wang. Team B included Yashi Das, Abhishek Emani, Saahil Shaik and Abdullah Shaikh.

The U.S. Department of Energy sponsors National Science Bowl.

“I am so very proud of our team. What an exceptional group of Bob Jones students!” Bob Jones Principal Sylvia Lambert said.

“The National Science Bowl is a great opportunity for young people across America to come together through science,” U.S. Department of Energy Deputy Secretary David Turk said. “I want to congratulate the Bob Jones High School team on advancing to the national finals! Good luck to you — our future scientists, innovators and leaders!”

The National Science Bowl assembles thousands of students in middle and high school from across the country. They compete in a fast-paced question-and-answer format to solve technical problems. Students answer questions on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, earth and space sciences, physics and math.

Winning teams from middle and high schools will compete in the national finals. Virtual format may be required, depending on COVID-19 constraints. Officials will decide on virtual or in-person play by March 1.

If 2022 National Finals are virtual, middle school teams will compete on May 7, followed by high school teams on May 21. If the competition is in-person, the youth will gather on April 28 through May 2 in Washington D.C.

The Bob Jones team does plan to attend the national finals. The Department of Energy sponsors the finals and is paying for the students’ five-day trip.
