Latest Inductees in Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall Of Fame Have Madison Connection
MADISON- Seven women and five men, along with a team, were elected to the 2022 class of the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame in the recent ceremony held at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. Those inducted include two with ties to Madison.
Candice Storey Lee, former Bob Jones and Vanderbilt basketball standout and current director of athletics at Vanderbilt, and Jamie Hill, former baseball standout at Hazel Green, MTSU and UAH before playing professionally in the Texas Rangers’ system, were included into the 29th class of the Hall of Fame and now sit among the elite few who had their names forever enshrined into the history of athletics in Madison County.
Storey Lee was a basketball force for the Lady Patriots in the mid-1990s when she averaged 23 points and 21 rebounds per game as a senior in 1996 and was named All-State and Class 5A Player of the Year. Accepting a scholarship to play for the Lady Commodores, she was a team captain and key contributor to the Vanderbilt women’s team, which won the SEC Tournament in 2002 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament every year she was on the Commodore squad. She withstood injuries to continue her play in one of the toughest conferences in all of women’s college basketball.
Beyond her playing days, Storey Lee remained a major player in the contributions to the black and gold colors of her alma mater. In May of 2020, she was named Vanderbilt’s Vice Chancellor and Athletic Director, making history as the first woman to serve as an athletic director in the Southeastern Conference.
Now the principal at Discovery Middle School, Jamie Hill is a 1995 graduate of Hazel Green High where he was a three-sport star playing in football, soccer and baseball, but his forte was baseball. A hard-throwing lefthanded pitcher began to excel as a junior where he was 7-3 with a 1.78 ERA tossing two one-hit games. At the plate, he batted .306 and was named the MVP and Player of the Year in Madison County. In his senior season, Hill was 10-0 with an incredible 0.95 ERA while striking out 140 batters in 73 innings pitched. His overall talents presented him the MVP Award two years in-a-row.
After completing his play with the Trojans, Hill signed to play for Middle Tennessee State University for two years winning the Ohio Valley Conference’s Freshman of the Year Award. After two years he transferred to UAH where he had two outstanding seasons going 11-3 as a junior and 11-4 in his senior campaign where his talents propelled the Chargers to advance to the South Regional. Upon completing his college play and education he played in the Texas Rangers’ organization for two years.
Hill is married to his wife, Denise, who is a graduate of Bob Jones in 1993 and their two sons both graduated from the Patriots’ program as well. Hill was a coach prior to moving into the administration scope of education.
