I-565 widening project in Madison to start

MADISON – The contractor on the I-565 widening project anticipates starting work next week to expand the interstate spur to six lanes through Madison.

The $29 million project stretches from west of County Line Road to east of Wall Triana Highway. It includes adding a third lane on each roadway and widening two sets of bridges — at Bradford Creek just west of Exit 9 (Wall Triana Highway) and at Intergraph Way and the Norfolk Southern railroad just east of Exit 9 — to accommodate the additional lanes.

Workers fasten a large orange diamond-shaped sign to posts and prepare to raise it into position.
Workers erect a warning sign.

Widening will primarily take place to the inside of the existing roadways, where there is currently a grassy median. The contractor will install concrete barrier to separate traffic from the median work area.

The contractor, Wiregrass Construction, plans to begin work Sunday evening. Motorists should expect lane closures between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday nights/Monday mornings through Thursday nights/Friday mornings.

Construction is anticipated to take about two years.

Some project signs remain covered until work begins.

Six-lane corridor

After completion, I-565 will have a minimum of six lanes from I-65 to Memorial Parkway (US-231/US-431) in Huntsville. Nearly 70,000 vehicles travel I-565 though Madison daily.

Previous I-565 widening project

A project completed in late 2021 expanded most of I-565 in Limestone County to six lanes. The project widened more than seven miles from west of the I-65 interchange to west of County Line Road. The Rebuild Alabama Act funded the $14.3 million project.
