Alabama lawmakers applaud Trump’s decision to relocate Space Command to Huntsville — ‘This wrong has been righted’

Following a Tuesday press conference held in the Oval Office, Alabama lawmakers offered reactions to President Donald Trump’s announcement that U.S. Space Command is officially relocating to Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal.

The move from Trump reverses a previous decision made by the Biden Administration in 2023 that kept Space Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado, despite reports showing Huntsville as the best choice for the long-term site of the command.

Alabama’s federal and state-level elected officials, many of whom were present for the announcement, praised the President’s decision.

U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) represents the district where Space Command will be located.

“I want to thank President Trump and Secretary of Defense Hegseth for their commitment to doing what is best for the security and future of our nation, and I remain grateful for the unified support of the entire Alabama delegation along the way,” Strong said. “The U.S. Space Command Headquarters will be at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama’s Fifth Congressional District!”

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) called Tuesday’s news “historic.”

“Alabama was chosen in 2021 because it was the absolute best location for the Space Command headquarters. Today, in 2025, it remains the best location for our national security and for the taxpayer. This basing decision has been affirmed and reaffirmed by multiple agencies and multiple officials throughout both the Trump and Biden administrations,” Rogers noted. “Biden was content to have Space Command located in the fourth-best location because it served him politically. The differences between him and President Trump have never been clearer.”

“On this historic day, I am extremely proud to be an American, proud to be an Alabamian, and proud to support the Administration that made this possible.”

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) referenced ‘political gamesmanship’ from the previous administration that kept Space Command in Colorado, rather than Alabama.

“President Trump’s decision to relocate Space Command Headquarters to Huntsville is not just welcome, but long overdue. From the beginning, Huntsville was designated as the best location for Space Command by the Department of Defense,” Palmer said. “The proximity to Redstone Arsenal and the state-of-the-art infrastructure, community support, and cost effectiveness placed Huntsville at the top of the list. The Biden administration’s decision to keep Space Command in Colorado ignored all facts. Today’s announcement corrects this misstep and prioritizes our national security.”

U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) noted that Trump’s decision to move the command to Huntsville fixes a years-long error.

“I applaud President Trump’s decision to locate U.S. Space Command in Huntsville,” Aderholt said. “The Air Force originally selected Huntsville in 2021 based 100% on merit as the best choice. President Biden reversed that decision based on politics. This wrong has been righted, and Space Command will take its place among Huntsville’s world-renowned space, aeronautics, and defense leaders.”

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) hailed the news as a ‘win for Alabama, a win for America, and a win for common sense.’

“Redstone Arsenal is where Space Command belongs, not because of politics, but because of proven performance,” Moore articulated. “Alabama has led the way in space, missile defense, and national security for decades. Now, Space Command will be anchored in the Rocket City, where the mission and the people are ready to keep America the best in the world. I am proud to have fought alongside my colleagues in the Alabama delegation to achieve this victory and am grateful to President Trump for his leadership.”

U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) echoed her colleagues’ support of the upcoming relocation.

“Huntsville, Alabama, is unequivocally the best place for Space Command,” said Sewell. “The Rocket City and the entire State of Alabama are thrilled to continue playing a central role in advancing the United States’ dominance in the frontier of space.”

“I have been an outspoken proponent for bringing Space Command to its rightful home in Alabama, and I have repeatedly joined my colleagues in the Alabama delegation—under both Democratic and Republican administrations—to make clear that Huntsville is the best location based on the merits.”

U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) touted Huntsville’s reputation as a force in aerospace and its potential as a home for Space Command.

“Having the U.S. Space Command in Huntsville is a win for the Rocket City and a win for Alabama. Huntsville has long been a leader in aerospace, and I believe the state has shown it can handle our nation’s space defense. This move will not only create high-quality jobs in the region, but will also bring significant investments that benefit the entire state.”

Governor Kay Ivey also issued a statement, declaring Space Command is coming to ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’

“Soon after President Trump directed the Department of Defense in 2018 to begin planning for this new military branch, Space Force, we began making our own preparations in Alabama for the city of Huntsville to compete to be home for Headquarters,” Ivey said. “As I have said all along, there is no better place to locate Space Command Headquarters than in Huntsville, Alabama. Today, the facts prevailed.”

Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth called on Alabamians to welcome Space Command to its new home.

“President Trump has reversed Biden’s blatantly political decision and awarded Space Command HQ to the place that independent surveys said was best — the Rocket City of Huntsville. The right decision TRUMPED politics. Join me in welcoming Space Command to our Sweet Home Alabama.”
