Lady Mustangs Volleyball lose head coach

MADISON – A good coach will know when to call it quits. Nikki Knott has done just that by announcing her retirement as head coach of the Madison Academy volleyball program after 16 years at the school including the last seven as head coach of the varsity Lady Mustangs.

“Coaching at Madison Academy has been one of the greatest blessings of my life,” said Knott, upon her announcement as she, too, played for the school as a three-sport athlete and graduated in 1989. “As a player and graduate, what began as a dream years ago turned into 16 seasons filled with growth, relationships and purpose.”

Madison Academy athletic director Mark Mincher said of Knott’s departure, “She has done an exceptional job while leading our volleyball program. Her multiple winning seasons and area championships reflect her success on the court. Off the court, Nikki has poured into our young ladies to foster growth physically, emotionally and, most importantly, spiritually.”

“I’ve watched young women become leaders on and off the court and I couldn’t be more proud of what this program represents, which are faith, family and hard work,” added Knott.

She spent 16 seasons at the private school within the program, but took over the head coach position in 2019. During her tenure, she amassed an overall record of 229-138. Within the record came Area Championships in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024. She also led her teams to regional appearances in each of her seven seasons as head coach and was thrilled to see several of her players make the step to college volleyball through athletic scholarships.

Knott will continue coaching with GRIT Volleyball Club for the 14 Premier team alongside her eldest daughter of three children, Olivia, who has been coaching alongside Knott at Madison Academy since 2022. Knott will also begin a Coaches’ Bible Study and Support Group for female coaches.

“Though this chapter is closing, my heart will always be with the Mustangs,” added Knott.
