Madison Academy avoids scare at Pisgah

The Madison Academy Mustangs defeated the Pisgah High School Eagles 27-16 Friday, Oct. 8.

The game, which took place at Pisgah, ended up going to MA, but the Eagles put up a good fight.

The ‘Stangs finished off the first half of the game on top, 14-9, but lagged in the third. Jake Hamlett almost run managed a touchdown in the third, but Pisgah quickly bombarded him. Kameron Jackson experienced a similar situation when he made good yardage by dodging the Eagles twice before finally being taken down.

During the stagnant third quarter, MA called a timeout to regroup and strategize.

The Mustangs wouldn’t come back full swing until the fourth quarter, where they managed to gain another 13 points to Pisgah’s 7.

“We were on our heels all night,” said head coach Eric Cohu. “They came out, got the onside kick, rammed down the field and scored. Hats off to our guys, we had a good second quarter and a good fourth quarter.”

Madison Academy failed to receive the ball the entire third quarter. Cohu said one of Pisgah’s strong points was running the ball and his team was going to have to play harder in order to put an end to it, especially for next week’s game against Geraldine High.

“We told the boys that Pisgah knows how to run the football very well and for next week, we’re going to have to be more efficient,” he said, “and we need to get more than 14 points in the first half and actually burn some clock a little bit.

The Mustangs rounded off the game with 21 rush attempts; 2-88 net yards rushed; 184 passing net yards, 14.2 total completion and 40.0 average start drive.

The Mustangs will take on Geraldine High School Oct. 15 at Madison.
