Weaver raises bar at Bob Jones

LORETTA GILLESPIE / SPECIAL TO THE RECORD

Katy Weaver has been a drama queen all of her life, so it was no surprise to her friends and family when she called and said she had been chosen as a Junior Maid on the Bob Jones Homecoming Court last year… and again this year.

“You won’t believe this, Mom,” Katy said when she first informed her mother. “But, I’m on the Homecoming Court, again.”

Pam Weaver recalls that Katy said pretty much the same thing last year, “You won’t believe this….”

But Pam did believe it, because she knows that Katy’s classmates are great kids who always go the extra mile to make sure that Katy is a part of things at Bob Jones High School.

“I have to say that the kids and the faculty at Bob Jones have made every effort to include Katy and to make her feel welcome and accepted,” Pam said.

Katy is a special needs student. She enjoys school and has always loved being in the spotlight. Even as far back as pre-school at Horizon Elementary, Katy was chosen as best actress and again for most dramatic in her school play, The Wizard of Oz, in which she portrayed the Mayor of Munchkin City.

Katy also loves to sing, and was in the church choir in Asbury Methodist Church. She continues to enjoy playing Miracle Leagues Baseball, where she has been a diamond debutant since the age of five. Her life is full and exciting. She bubbles over with enthusiasm about her recent part in the Homecoming Half-Time Show and riding in the parade.

As the crowd cheered, her father, Marty, and 17- year-old brother, Charlie, escorted her across the football field for the second time. Katy, dressed in a new white suit, smiled proudly, acknowledging the applause like a true princess.

“I was really excited for her because she is so happy about it,” said her mom. “It was really a special moment for her. It makes her so happy to be a part of things.”

Marty Weaver is understandably proud of Katy’s honor.

“Katy’s full of spunk and determination,” he said. “She loves being the center of attention. She is having a great time at Bob Jones.”

Katy has another year in school. She sometimes dreams of designing wedding dresses. Other times she thinks she might like to work in a library. Whatever the future holds in store for Katy Weaver, you can rest assured that it won’t be boring, and that she will add a little drama to the lives of everyone she meets.

“I’m very proud of all my sister has accomplished,” said Charlie. “There’s never a dull moment whenever you hang out with her. “
