A&M trustees approve tuition increase

The Alabama A&M University Board of Trustees Friday, June 22, officially approved a 5 percent tuition increase, effective fall semester 2012. Administrators cited cuts in state appropriations and operations costs as being among the catalysts for the increase.

Here’s what this means.  Instate undergraduate students will now pay an additional $165 for a total of $4,245 tuition and fees.  Excluding room and board costs, out-of-state undergraduate tuition and fees would increase to $7,740.  In-state graduate tuition and fees will be $4,998 and $9,246 for out-of-state graduate students per semester.  Costs are estimated based on 15 semester hours for undergraduate and 12 graduate semester hours.

The Board made the decision to implement the increase after hearing fiscal reports and information from the University’s divisions of academic affairs, student affairs, advancement, research and athletics.

AAMU will add more undergraduate degree programs that bolster its curriculum offerings with programs in entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary professional studies with various concentrations. A master’s level program in communications specialist will be added, as well.

Due to low enrollment, four bachelor’s and two master’s programs will be eliminated.

The University will end its undergraduate degree programs in animal science, business education, electrical engineering technology and industrial technology. Graduate degree programs in agribusiness and industrial technology will also be phased out.

The Board’s next regularly scheduled meeting will be Oct. 26. Committee meetings will occur on Oct. 12.
