Mustangs Outrun Colts

BY SCOTT WRIGHT / FOR THE RECORD

The Madison Academy Mustangs used a total team effort to dismantle the Clements Colts on Friday night.

Bill Washington Stadium was a witness to the Mustangs domination as the Academy won 55-0.  The Clements Colts, coming off two extremely tough games, were shorthanded and it showed against the highly ranked Mustangs.

At the half, Madison Academy owned a 34-0 lead while only possessing the ball for 3:19 in the first half. Kerryon Johnson continued his fantastic play with 90 yards on three carries for two touchdowns in the first half. He was joined in the touchdown ranks by Malik Miller who ran for two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass in the first half.

The Colts had very limited success on the offensive side of the ball as the one sustained drive they were able to put together was wiped out by a Nick Haas interception. Senior Cole Swearingen said, “We could not get caught up looking past this game; we knew we had to come out and take control of the game early. We were able to do that and it allowed us to put points on the board.”

The Mustangs would substitute frequently in the second half and would run the ball exclusively, content to simply run the clock out. Freshman Noah Harrison received the bulk of the carries in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs were able to possess the ball longer in the fourth quarter than they had in the other three quarters combined.

The Mustangs will be faced with a tough task as they travel to Deshler High School in Tuscumbia, Alabama next Friday night to play against a frustrated Deshler Tiger team that suffered a defeat against Lauderdale County in their last contest.

The Mustangs (2-1, 2-0) are sitting in prime position for all of their team goals if they can take care of their business next Friday night.
