PTA councils to host forum on school safety

PTA councils in Madison and Huntsville are planning a public forum on school safety.

“The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn. is weighing heavy upon (our) hearts and minds during this holiday season,” Sonja S. Griffith said. Griffith, as Madison City PTA Council president, is working with the Huntsville Council of PTAs for a community forum in mid-January.

“We hope to include safety experts, child psychologists and other speakers,” Griffith said. She soon will announce the forum’s time and location.

“I don’t know how much your children know about what occurred (at Sandy Hook), but ways (are available) to support the school and their PTA,” Griffith said.

Griffith received suggestions from the National PTA and the Connecticut PTSA for support of the Newtown community. Community leaders in Newtown have requested outside help in supporting the families, Griffith said.

When school resumes, Sandy Hook students will report to a new building. “Parent and volunteers are working to ensure that students are welcomed back by a winter wonderland with the entire school decorated with as many unique snowflakes as possible,” Griffith said.

Local residents can make and mail snowflakes by Jan. 12 to Connecticut PTSA, 60 Connolly Parkway, Building 12, Suite 103, Hamden, CT 06514.

The Connecticut PTSA will accept donations indefinitely to the “Sandy Hook Fund” to provide ongoing support to the community, Griffith said. Individuals can mail checks to the preceding address.

Groups in Madison County may consider organizing a ‘Fundraiser for Sandy Hook Elementary School.’ “Fundraising projects for groups may include walk-a-thons, spirit days, pajama days, for example,” Griffith said.
