‘The Morning Show’ gets rave reviews at Columbia

MADISON – Daily announcements crackling over the intercom have been modernized with videography for “The Morning Show” at Columbia Elementary School.
The show influences Columbia students with visual images that encourage, educate, add humor and increase character development, assistant principal and show producer Brett Chapman said.
YouTube video clips and upbeat music in “The Morning Show” capture students’ attention. “Music videos with lyrics talking about being happy and positive are all clips I try to incorporate,” Chapman said.
Columbia students enjoy seeing themselves on TV. In addition, the show keeps everyone up-to-date on special events, like Dr. Seuss Week and Space Week.
Chapman records the four- to 10-minute show with a video camera. He then uses iMovie software to edit and add clips.
From his YouTube appearances, ‘Kid President’ encourages his peers to be kind and caring, work hard and live life to the fullest. “A catchy song talks about the states and their capitals,” Chapman said. He incorporates clips of current events, like the Winter Olympics, and students have learned the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance.
Columbia’s students and teachers “are what make ‘The Morning Show’ happen. “Clips from day-to-day activities and their willingness to be videotaped acting silly make (everyone) watch,” he said.
From third grade, Sophie Spitzmiller stays tuned to hear the lunch menu. Ashlynn Daniel likes “when it says to be your best.” Camden Wells watches to learn new things.
“The music gets stuck in my head,” Taylor Troutt said. Also from fifth grade, Claudia Vargas said “the show makes me feel awake and starts an upbeat day in school.” Nicholas Johnson enjoys “great music, funny quotes and inspirational videos.” Gavin Newberry said the show motivates and informs him.
“My boys come home talking about (what) they’ve learned and singing songs,” parent Heather Gjesvold said. At Karyn Murphree’s house, her children “laugh and talk about ‘The Morning Show.’ Makes me wish I could see what they’re talking about.”
