Madison City Chess League announces summer practice hours
MADISON – After the Memorial Day holiday, chess players in Madison will stay busy with their summer practice schedule.
Madison City Chess League meets at Hogan Family YMCA, 130 Park Square Lane on Mondays. Starting June 2, summer hours for practices will be 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The league will not meet on Memorial Day, May 26.
“Playing chess on Monday nights over the summer will help kids keep up their chess skills,” volunteer Ranae Bartlett said. “Our summer camps at Rainbow Elementary School in July will also help kids improve their chess game.”
On June 1, league players will enjoy the “Great Big Play Day” when they gather at the Queen’s Chess Board at Huntsville Botanical Garden.
The SIMUL (simultaneous) Night Fundraiser on June 23 will involve a match with a chess master playing all of the students at the same time.
Rainbow Elementary School will host the Summer Knights Chess Camp on July 16-18. Then, on July 19, the Summer Knights Chess Tournament will be held at Rainbow. The first day of school will be Aug. 5.
For practices, the YMCA requires all parents with children 12 years old and younger to remain on premises at all times. After signing in, YMCA members can exercise at the facility while their children play chess.
Parents who are not YMCA members must bring photo identification and a signed waiver form. For more information about Hogan Family YMCA, call 256-705-9622.
The chess league is designed for youth and adults who already know how to play chess. League membership is free for all Madison students in grades K-12 who can play chess.
