MADISON – St. John the Baptist Catholic School will observe Catholic Schools Week on Jan. 25-31 with special activities and outreach to many community servants in Madison.

“Catholic schools across the nation take the last week in January to celebrate the value a Catholic education provides to young people and its contribution to our church, communities and nation,” principal Shari Lewis said. “St. John’s Catholic School is proud to join in that celebration.”

The 2015 theme is “Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

Each St. John’s family has decorated a star to share personal details about themselves. “The stars line our hallways showing our differences and similarities,” Lewis said.

To show gratitude to people in service jobs, each grade is sending representatives throughout the City of Madison “with ‘goody’ baskets that show our appreciation for that organization’s dedication and contribution to our community,” Lewis said.

Four-year-olds in kindergarten and first-graders will visit Madison Fire and Rescue Department. Kindergartners in the five-year-old class will go to City Hall to meet and talk with Mayor Troy Trulock. Second-graders will deliver treats to members of Madison City Council.

St. John’s third-graders will go to Madison Public Library, while fourth-graders will acknowledge the St. John’s Catholic Church’s office staff. Madison Police Department will receive snacks from fifth-graders.

The sixth-grade class will visit members at Madison Senior Center, while seventh-graders will go to Morningside of Madison assisted living community. Eighth-graders will say ‘thank you’ to Madison Chamber of Commerce.

“Each day is designed with a theme in mind so we can recognize different groups of people involved in our community,” Lewis said. “We’ll recognize students and have a day of fun-filled activities outside of normal classroom instruction. We’ll honor our priests and deacons, parents and teachers with different acknowledgements.”

Catholic Schools Week will conclude with a prayer service “thanking God for the many graces and blessings that are given to us,” Lewis said.

The school’s address is 1057 Hughes Road. For more information, call 256-722-0772 or visit stjohnb.com.
