Caring hearts helping our Honduran neighbors

From The Publisher

It is gratifying to be a member of a local civic organization that has a global reach.

The Rotary Club of Madison recently completed its annual International service projects.

It was the ninth year of projects in partnership with the Rotary Club of Choluteca, Honduras.

Eleven team members from Madison and Calhoun City, Miss. spent one week helping the villagers of southern Honduras.

This team included Dr. Amy Thompson, Dr. Michael St. Peter, D.J. Klein, Tim McMicken, Dennis Sanders, Maria Dyar, Brittany Bradford, Jevon O’Neal, Dr. Jim Dobbs, Fred Nabors and Allen Dearing.

The team worked hard to facilitate the production of EcoStoves – clean-burning, well-ventilated wood-burning stoves – for families in Honduras.

The benefits of these stoves include cleaner air, a larger cooking surface and a safer cooking area.

The team also provided dental care for many of the children in the surrounding villages of Choluteca.

Sanders said, “the strategy at the dental clinics was to focus on applying sealants to children at the critical ages where they were developing new molars. All patients got a thorough cleaning and other services, such as fillings and extractions, as needed.”

This team even found time to focus on vision needs of the residents by outfitting them with prescription eyeglasses.

The local Lions Club donated three crates of eyeglasses for this specific project.

Everyone in this group should be recognized for their courage and generosity.

They spent months planning the week-long effort and it made a major difference for many of the southern Honduras villagers.

The Madison Record and Madison County Record would like to encourage our readers to submit stories and photos to news@madisoncountyrecord.com of any mission trips and charity work projects.

It will be our pleasure to recognize the wonderful deeds of those in our community.
