MADISON – The Panthers are getting what her fellow students called “The Hammer” this upcoming volleyball season, as Bob Jones senior Jeneva Salter signed papers to make official her intentions to attend Birmingham-Southern and play volleyball.

Salter played 326 sets in her career with the Patriots, garnering 1,194 kills and 164 blocks. She is also credited with 116 digs in her high school career which, as her former coach April Marsh commented at Salter’s signing, is impressive given her lineup placement.

“You love to see kids who are competitive,” Marsh said.

Salter was a member of the 2013 state championship Bob Jones team and the 2014 that was bounced in the state semifinals.

“I’m proud of how we went down last year,” Salter mentioned in her signing. “It takes a good loss to stay humble.”

True to her looking ahead to the future, Marsh said Salter was in the Bob Jones gym the other day helping future volleyball players hone their craft at the tryouts.

Salter alluded to the fact in her speech that she won’t be going in cold to Birmingham-Southern, as Melaina Hissam, her self-described “best friend since third grade,” also signed to play volleyball with the Panthers.

“You brought me to my first-ever volleyball clinic; thank you,” Salter said.

In a final ode to her classmates, Salter expressed her gratitude for her fellow students cheering her and the team on at matches.

“Thanks for always supporting me, and thanks for making up “The Hammer” cheer,” Salter said.

Salter, a middle hitter, and Hissam, playing the unique “libero” position, will play for head volleyball coach Jeff White at Birmingham-Southern.
