MADISON – Before returning to classrooms on Aug. 5, chess players in Madison have numerous back-to-school events to check out, thanks to Madison City Chess League.

On July 25, the Summer Knights Chess Tournament will be held at Rainbow Elementary School. “Whether you’re a first-time tournament player or an experienced one, this tournament is just for you,” league executive director Ranae Bartlett said.

The tournament has both rated and non-rated sections available.

Bughouse Night is July 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Hogan Family YMCA. With Bughouse chess, two two-member teams play with two chessboards. “We’ve been practicing Bughouse chess for a month to get ready for the ultimate Bughouse tournament,” Bartlett said.

Girls Chess Night at Taziki’s, 105 Brookridge Drive will be held on July 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with special guest Mayor Troy Trulock, who promises a special announcement. “Girls Chess Night started this summer and has been a big success,” Bartlett said. “Bring your chess sets and play chess with other girls in the area.”

Again at Taziki’s, Spirit Night for the league will occur on Aug. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. Taziki’s will donate 10 percent of sales to the league.

“Movie Day at the Library” on Aug. 1 will feature “Brooklyn Castle” from 2 to 4 p.m. at Madison Public Library. “Brooklyn Castle,” a 2012 documentary, profiles the junior high chess team at Brooklyn IS318, a New York public school serving mostly students who live below the poverty line.

Because of Madison schools’ open houses, the league won’t meet on Aug. 3.

On Aug. 4, players will gather for ChessKid Night to log on to chesskid.com at 6 p.m. “from wherever you are and play Fast Chess games with other kids from Madison,” Bartlett said.

Madison City Chess League meets on Mondays at Hogan Family YMCA from 6:30 to 8 p.m., except on holidays and special occasions. On Aug. 10, the league will resume weekly practices.
