MADISON – Two local residents are working to help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by entering the “Man of the Year” and “Woman of the Year” campaign.

Jason Langiewicz and Dr. Dawn Mancuso have committed to help the 2016 initiative.

The Man and Woman of the Year campaign raises funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. Nationwide, communities organize fundraising teams to vie for the titles of “Man of the Year” and “Woman of the Year.”

“I am part of team working to raise as much as possible in a 10-week period,” Mancuso said on her campaign website. “Every dollar I raise counts as one vote, and the candidate who gets the most votes and raises the most money is named the Man or Woman of the Year.”

The society’s mission is to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The society funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services.

“Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and, in some cases, quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers,” Mancuso said. Many LLS-supported therapies also treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers.

“LLS-funded drugs, like targeted therapies and immunotherapies, are now saving thousands of lives every day,” Mancuso said. “We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers.”

Langiewicz is sponsoring a “Championship BBQ Fundraiser” with Boston butt roasts for pre-sale at $40. Pickup of barbecue orders will be April 30 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 980 Hughes Road.

The campaign runs through June 1. To vote for Langiewicz or order barbecue, visit www.mwoy.org/pages/tn/hsv16/jlangiewic. To vote for Mancuso, visit www.mwoy.org/pages/tn/hsv16/dmancuso.
