Drummond endears reading to future generations

MADISON – Eileen Drummond is a new employee at Madison Public Library but certainly is not a newcomer. She has been an avid patron since moving to Madison in 2010 and recently accepted the position as Youth Services Librarian.

“My children and I attended story time and other library programs loyally. Mandy Pinyan and Maggie Allen were the children’s librarians at that time, and they both did a fabulous job making the library an enjoyable experience for patrons,” Drummond said.

Learning about the library’s job opening, she wanted “to help re-create the experience I had received as a story-time mom to future generations.”

As Youth Services Librarian, Drummond works with colleague Lisa Blackmon to define story-time programs, train new teen volunteers and manage collections for juvenile and young adult media.

In addition, she collaborates with other youth services librarians across the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library system, plans the summer reading program and coordinates “Once Upon a Winter’s Night.”

“My favorite part of my job is connecting children with books they love,” Drummond said.

Previously, Drummond worked as an elementary music teacher in public and private schools in the Dayton, Ohio area from 1999 to 2003. Her next job was stay-at-home mom.

In Ohio, she graduated from Cedarville College with a bachelor’s degree in music education. Currently, Drummond is pursuing a master’s degree in library and information studies at the University of Alabama.

In Drummond’s field, librarians meet many people who make an impression in their lives. For Drummond, that special person was Sherry Parsons.

“Sherry was the children’s librarian at the Beavercreek Public Library in Ohio — my children’s first librarian. She made my children feel special by always addressing them by name,” she said.

Drummond’s children looked forward to story time because of Sherry. “I hope that I make story time as memorable for children in Madison,” she said.

Drummond’s husband works in information security. Their children attend Madison City Schools.

If she has spare time, Drummond likes to play board games with family and friends.
