MADISON – Like its sister schools, Horizon Elementary School has scheduled Curriculum Nights soon after the new school year starts.

“We’ll be hosting curriculum nights again this year,” Horizon Principal Rodney Richardson said. “Curriculum Nights are designed to inform parents of academic expectations in the classroom.”

Teachers will present their expectations and procedures, along with pertinent information about each grade’s course of study. “These nights also afford you the opportunity to ask questions and receive clarification about what your child will be learning,” Richardson said.

Curriculum Night for third and fifth grades will be held Aug. 26 from 5 to 6 p.m. Also on Aug. 26, families of kindergartners and first-graders can visit from 6 to 7 p.m.

On Aug. 28, families with children in grades 2, 4 and 6 can visit Curriculum Night from 5 to 6 p.m.

With the opening of the 2014-2015 school year, Horizon now has a SmartBoard or interactive presentation system in all classrooms. “We also upgraded equipment in the computer labs just before the end of the last school year,” Richardson said. “We’re working to add more technology devices in the classrooms this upcoming year.”

Horizon has qualified as a “Leader in Me” school. The book, “Leader in Me,” by Steven Covey led to this leadership program.

“This year, our Lighthouse Team has led the charge in developing our approach to incorporating the habits in our school for students and faculty. The faculty has adopted a new vision, mission and acrostic (stylized acronym) that characterizes our school,” Richardson said.
